Windows Server 2008是微软最新的服务器操作系统，它继承了Windows Server 2003。Windows Server 2008在进行开发及测试时的代号为Windows Server "Longhorn"。

Windows Server 2008 是一套和Windows Vista（代号为Longhorn）相对应的服务器操作系统系统，两者拥有很多相同功能；Vista和Server 2008、XP和Server 2003 间存在相似的关系。（XP和Server 2003的代号分别为Whistler及Whistler Server）

Windows Server 2008 的测试版本 Server Longhorn Beta 1 于2005年 7月27日发布、Beta 2 版本则于2006年 5月23日公布，2007年 4月发布了功能发展齐备的Beta 3版本。Release Candidate 0(下称RC)在2007年9月24日公布。RC 1发布在 2007年12月25日.，这是推出市面前最后的一个测试版本。正式版2008年2月27日发布，版本号为6.0 (Build 6001)。

支持的平台

Windows Server 2008支持64bit及32bit的处理器，其中Windows Server 2008 for Itanium-based Systems支持IA-64处理器。IA-64是英特尔公司与惠普公司共同开发的纯64bit微处理器。IA是Intel Architecture（英特尔架构）的缩写，64指64bit系统。

版本

大多数的Windows Server 2008都同时拥有64bit和32bit两个版本，Windows Server 2008 for Itanium-based Systems支持IA-64处理器，IA-64版本被设计用来处理高工作量的工作，比如数据操作或者处理企业核心业务流程，但是IA-64版本没有对文件服务器或者多媒体服务器进行优化，微软宣称Windows Server 2008是该公司最后一个支持32bit的服务器操作系统，下面是Windows Server 2008版本的列表，它延续了Windows Server 2003 的版本命名方式:

功能

Windows Server 2008的核心编码与Windows Vista一样，因此它包含有许多同样的改进。当中最引人注意的地方是它崭新的安装模式：它在安装时允许服务器的管理员选择安装整个服务器软件，又或是只安装「服务器核心」(Server Core)。

「服务器核心」是一种回复到从前的安装方式，没有使用者图形接口，所有的设定与维护全都是由指令码控制，或者是利用Microsoft Management Console作远程联机操作。"服务器核心"同时也不会内建.NET Framework，Internet Explorer及其它许多跟核心服务器不相干的功能。一个「服务器核心」主机可以以四个身分来控制网域控制者、DNS服务器、DHCP服务器及档案服务器。

一个新的只读Active Directory 网域控制站 (Read-only Domain Controller, RODC) 操作模式
政策式网络作业(Policy-based networking)，改良了的管理界面及增强了的用户协调功能
